Rekindling Discipleship: How Organic Disciples Transformed Our Church
OOI Staff
We are continually inspired by the incredible stories of transformation and growth that emerge from churches embracing lasting transformation. These narratives of revitalization and encouraging outcomes serve as powerful testimonies to the impact of active engagement in Organic Outreach. Today, we are delighted to share one such success story from Faith Church in Dyer, Indiana. Their journey exemplifies the positive change that can occur when a congregation wholeheartedly engages, fostering both spiritual growth and evangelism.
Last January, our church embarked on a journey that would unexpectedly revitalize our approach to discipleship and evangelism. When we announced the eight-week Organic Disciples series, some members of our congregation were skeptical. “Don’t we do that all the time?” they asked, voicing a sentiment that echoed the fatigue many felt towards “another series on discipleship.”
Little did we know that this series would become a catalyst for profound change within our church community.
As the weeks progressed, a palpable shift occurred. The initial reluctance gave way to a growing excitement. People weren’t just attending church; they were looking forward to it. The series provided markers for spiritual growth, allowing individuals to gauge their progress in various areas of discipleship. This tangible method of self-evaluation resonated with our congregation, giving them concrete ways to measure their spiritual journey.
Perhaps the most significant impact came from the series’ unique approach to spiritual disciplines. Traditionally viewed as personal, inward practices, these disciplines were reframed as tools for outward growth and mission. Each week, we explored how these internal practices could fuel our ability to share Jesus with friends and neighbors. This perspective shift was transformative, igniting a passion for both personal spiritual growth and evangelism.
As our congregation internalized these teachings, we witnessed the Holy Spirit’s work in remarkable ways. People began to open themselves up, allowing the markers and disciplines to shape not just their private faith but their public witness as well. The result was a beautiful synergy of deepening faith and expanding outreach.
To support this growth, we established groups across our different campuses, providing spaces for people to delve deeper into the markers. The response was overwhelming. We saw record numbers of attendees, but what truly astounded us was how these groups became gateways for evangelism. Our members, energized by their own spiritual growth, began inviting disconnected friends to join them. The groups became not just centers of discipleship but also welcoming spaces for those curious about faith.
This dual impact – deepening discipleship and heightening evangelism – was beyond our expectations. The Organic Disciples series didn’t just teach about mission; it actively raised the “evangelism temperature” of our church. We watched in awe as personal spiritual growth naturally flowed into a desire to share faith with others.
As we reflect on this experience, we’re filled with gratitude. What started as “another discipleship series” became a transformative journey for our entire church. The Organic Disciples approach reminded us that true discipleship is never static; it’s a dynamic process that naturally leads to sharing our faith with others.
Our church has been profoundly blessed by this experience. We’ve seen firsthand how a fresh approach to age-old truths can reignite passion, deepen faith, and expand our impact in the community. The story of Organic Disciples in our church is a testament to the power of aligning personal spiritual growth with outward mission – a reminder that when we grow in Christ, we naturally grow towards others.
